Bleeding Heart Baboons

The Roll Up

In partnership with

Well hey there folks,

Miss us? I sure did. But between the fact that it was Halloween literally yesterday (and yes, I know what literally means, I am using it for dramatic effect) and the winter holidays arriving tomorrow (also aware of what tomorrow means, thankyouverymuch) I feel like we have to pause every now and then so as not to crash and burn. And I know you want that for yourself and others this year, I just know it. So, my dear Roly Polies, (are we liking Roly Polies? Open to other ideas, I promise) did any of you push any little old ladies out of the way to get your hands on a Nintendo Switch 2 bundle on Black Friday (I mean, maybe ya’ll are some serious gangsters and you rolled up on some Grandmas out there I.DON’T.KNOW.). Also, someone come and please explain to my six-year-old that if you can’t pronounce Nintendo correctly, and you aren’t entirely sure what it is, then maybe you shouldn’t be asking for it from Santa. (read: “tender switch”). But as usual, I digress.

I have had the absolute pleasure of avoiding headlines, but they do tend to stamp their way forward regardless, don’t they? While the U.S. Government is back to work, I’m not sure it’s working. Marjorie Taylor Greene (who I think we have all said, I am agreeing with WHO now?! In the past few months a few times) is resigning from Congress (likely just because she wants to run for Prez, but whatever, this is our lives now.) NYC elected a socialist democratic mayor, Zohran Mamdani. Bitcoin has taken a plunge. Flooding in Sri Lanka along with other climate disasters in SE Asia have been horrific. A devastating fire in Hong Kong left many dead. And uncertainty abounds in Ukraine, Russia, and the Middle East. So um, ya know, the norm.

Before we dive into our normal shenanigans, we need to honor someone far more important than all of this: Alice Wong. Writer, organizer, and disability justice titan, she spent her life dragging inequity into the daylight and making space for voices too long ignored. May we humbly suggest giving the gift of one of her more well-known books, Disability Visibility this holiday season? The disability community lost a giant, but she left us the blueprint to keep pushing. Because like we always say, we go further, together.

As always, thank you for the support.

~Sarah

Updates on the App

In light of the recent holiday and in honor of the season, we would like to take a moment (like all corporations out there, thank you Target, yes, I get it – “you care”) to say thank you. I know, I know, but seriously, when I tell you we are a rag-tag troop of baboons (call back to a previous newsletter (INSERT LINK) we really are that. We are trying like heck to keep this train a’rolling and expanding the reach of Roll Mobility so that we can continue to be a source of information that is continually improved by those who use the app. We love writing the newsletter, and all of our side quests along the way like the long-awaited-yet-to-be-seen Spotlight series, and the upcoming Roll App glow-up (look for it in Q1, folks, you will not want to miss it). But we are so grateful for every share, mention, read, review, suggestion, criticism, and comment. We started this whole thing because we know it’s needed, we know it’s important, and we would not be here without all of our readers and app users – so thank you. From the bottom of our bleeding, ragged, determined hearts.

Accessi-stories From Around the World

Did you see that designer Bailey Hikawa just upped the accessibility grip game? If you are sitting there scratching your head, let me tell you. Hikawa, an artist and industrial designer, has been around the game long enough to make things that function beautifully and look good. Often, in unexpected places – she has an insanely beautiful toilet seat line, we kid you not. (Check out her stuff on her website.) She has popped onto the scene and shown that accessibility features don’t have to be boring, hard, and/or straight-up ugly or looking like it belongs in a hospital. Apple is promoting the new device, which doubles as both a grip and a stand and attaches to the back with a magnet. So how about the rest of those phone/tech companies-that-shall-not-be-named? Well, according to her website it is designed to work with other phones, but is primarily being marketed through Apple’s site. (Don’t come for me, two of us baboons are Android users, much to the chagrin of the rest of the Roll team, but they let us stick around as test cases. shrugs) Are you one of the folks who ended up buying one of these? If so, we’d love to hear how it’s working for you!

😄 Wheel-y Good News 😁

Good Folks Doin’ Good Thangs

Morgan’s Wonderland is out here raising the bar (and the bed height, and the shower bench, and our spirits…) with Morgan’s Hotel, an ultra-accommodating, fully accessible hotel that basically says, “What if we designed for disabled people first and let everyone else benefit?” We first read about this on The World Is Accessible site (shoutout!) and we are excited to see that some local channels have picked up the story. From roll-in everything to sensory-friendly rooms to wheelchair-charging stations (yes, really), this place is proving what we’ve been shouting for years: when you build with access in mind, you don’t just help disabled folks – you make travel better for literally everyone.

⚖️ Policy & Prejudice 🤫

Keeping the ol’ checks & balances in check

After weeks of backlash, the current administration is quietly backing away from its plan to overhaul Social Security disability benefits, including the part where they’d stop considering age, which would have gutted access for millions of older disabled adults. Good news indeed. But as with all things regarding this administration, don’t be singin’ their praises just yet. The White House has kept mum about the reversal, leaving advocates (and all of us, amIright?!) wondering whether this is a true course correction or just a pause before the next policy sneak attack hits. But for now? We’ll take it.

📣 “Your Ad Here”📢
