The Roll Up

Well hey there folks,
Another couple of weeks have come and gone, and suddenly, BAM. It’s November. If you, like me, are wondering how the hell we already did daylight savings and Halloween then just go straight to hibernation mode and make some soup. BUT. Not all the way into the bear cave because yes, the U.S. Government is still shut down, and millions of people will not have access to SNAP benefits. Please read the Policy and Prejudice section for more on this. And in case you forgot, which I am guessing you did not — it’s election day here in the U.S. of A. So go rock the vote, ya’ll! Direly important, as if I need to tell you.
Otherwise, Dick Cheney died.
That’s it. That’s all the big news.
It’s not. But, I think you get the picture by now.
The people that pulled off the Louvre heist got caught (and they’re hot). The Israel-Hamas-Gaza war still has both sides condemning the other over breaking the cease-fire and truce. Trump visited China and staved off additional tariffs that he had previously declared. And most other U.S. news is consumed with government shutdown discussions and repercussions. The L.A. Dodgers won the World Series, much to the chagrin of Canadians. (Sorry, eh?) Many competed in the NYC Marathon and the inspiration stories around the athletes was feel-good content to the max. And most importantly, the Denver Nuggets are looking SO GOOD this year. Especially Aaron Gordon (niche sport news? Maybe, maybe not.) Speaking of “sportsball” — did you see the article in the Kansas City Star about Jerod and his accessibility review of Arrowhead Stadium, highlighting Roll and his experience? (Check it out here if you haven’t.) He’s been trying to get to as many stadiums and arenas as he can reviewing the entire process from ticket sales to staff education to bathrooms and the viewing experience. Giving sports fans the vital POV on accessibility information they’ve been looking for. So, hook us up if you know someone in guest services or facilities so Jerod can continue his tour and show the world what it’s like to navigate these places!
Alright fam, you be good to yourself. And each other. Go vote. Go make a cuppa. Go make yourself a snack. And always, thank you for the support.
~Sarah

Updates on the App
Oooooh baby baby it’s a wild world, which is why we are so excited to tell you how freaking sweet our new updates are looking. We broke down. We couldn’t handle it all ourselves. We had to ask for help (shocker!) and we done hired an UX designer (user experience) who is blazing through our backlog of updates on the app. I CANNOT wait to tell you more. I know, I tease a LOT here. And while I know you are all sitting there with bated breath on all the fun updates we’ve hinted at, I assure you it is all coming in due time. We may have the brains of baboons (not a diss — Baboons be smart ya’ll, along with Pigeons, but let’s not get me started on our domesticated and forgotten feathered-friends.) but we are hoping you, like us, will remember all the things we are working toward to make Roll Mobility mo’ betta. (An aside: What do we call all of our diehard followers and readers? Any suggestions?)
Back to all things Roll:
Working on social features of the app – ability to recommend to others, comment etc.
Working on sensory reviews.
Working on the app itself — think bug fixes, no more glitches, better interface overall.
Working on our first and new couple of Spotlights (video interviews).
Working on more fun content on our socials.
Working on a landing page for the blog.
Working on merch so you can rep Roll hard with stickers and such.
Just in case you thought we were over here only just brainstorming names for our Roll followers. (Rollies? OMG – ROLLY POLLIES?!)
We’d love to hear from you! Did we miss the mark, or do you have an idea to make it better? Reach out at [email protected].

Accessi-stories From Around the World
While Multiple Sclerosis (MS) isn’t technically classified as a disability, this chronic neurological disorder can wreak havoc on the nervous system, eating away at the myelin sheath and causing varying levels of disability for most who live with it. Having worked in long-term care, I’ve seen firsthand the devastating effects of MS as it progresses. One of the first residents I ever grew close to was living with this disease, so this latest research hit home.
Scientists at UC San Francisco have now mapped out when and how MS starts and the beginning signs of disease can be seen earlier than thought. By analyzing thousands of proteins in the blood, researchers discovered that the immune system starts attacking the brain long before symptoms appear. It’s a breakthrough that could reshape early detection, prevention, and maybe, one day, lead to a cure.
Color me hopeful.

The Dialogue Express Café in Newham is run by deaf and hard of hearing staff
You may or may not have noticed our musings on community and the importance of it, and blah blah blah, yes we know, community = good. But I constantly harp on it, because it is so important! It’s how sh*t gets done. No one knows that better than the disability community. Often propped up as a pillar of how things CAN get accomplished in the face of adversity and often with little resources to boot. This café on the edge of London is hoping that by “forcing” customers to enter the deaf and hard of hearing world for just a little bit (instead of the other way around) that they can build community and inclusiveness in their redevelopment plans for the estate, by teaching them and having them order in British Sign Language (BSL). They are hoping to be a cornerstone of the community while offering jobs, and a place where both those that are deaf and those that hear feel welcome as part of the community. And we at Roll think that that is pretty dang nifty. Because if there is one thing we know for sure, we go further, together.

Keeping the ol’ checks & balances in check
Pay attention to this section for the quickie “What music is currently stuck in my head” quiz of the day.
Tired of shutdown news? Never gonna get it. I get it, but stick with me, because we’re getting granular, folks. We’re talking about why every election matters (yes, even the boring local ones) and how what’s happening nationally often mirrors the mess closer to home. Now it’s time for a breakdown: when government grinds to a halt, who takes the hit first and worst? Low-income families, people with disabilities, and say it with me now: children.
The federal shutdown has already put programs like SNAP and WIC on the chopping block, threatening food access for millions of households, including parents raising kids with disabilities. Meanwhile, in Pennsylvania, a budget standoff is holding education funding hostage, leaving public schools — especially special education programs — struggling to plan or even pay staff.
So yeah, this whole situation leaves me humming “(My Lovin’) You’re Never Gonna Get It” because what is truly never En Vogue is slashing the services that keep disabled kids, families, and communities afloat. It’s not just the amount withheld, it’s all the ways that it’s actually circulated in our local communities.
Which brings us all right back to what we’ve been hyping the last few months — today is the day to get out and vote!

📣 “Your Ad Here”📢
Any newsletter (or blog) has to have ads if they want to keep bringing the content and improving what they offer, and we really want to, AND we want to be able to scale this whole endeavor (namely: the app) and keep everything free on the user side. Well, in order to do that, we have to raise that cheddar baby. And in order to do so we have to bring you ads. I know, I know, everything is ads. But, we at least want to bring you things that are actually relevant. That’s where you come in, would-be advertisers! Your company that makes the little doohickey (I am not, in fact, 87 years old.) that holds your cell phone to your chair? Perfect place to advertise — right here in The Roll Up. Or, hey! Have a short shout-out/or event to advertise that our audience (read: disabled individuals and their support people) should know about? We have a spot for that too. See? No ad too small, no ad too large, it’s juuuussst right. See how we can help your business reach your desired demographics — over 9,000 people every two weeks. If this sounds like it’s right up your alley, find out more below.
