Being Heumann

Well, hey there folks,

Did you recover from The Roll App relaunch AND Halloween candy overload AND a full moon AND the midterms yet? No. Me neither. So let’s just get right to it. Because today’s newsletter is really just a “hey, check this out!” kind of thing. Roll recommends, if you will.

As many of you know, but in case you don’t, in 1977, Judy Heumann and more than 100 disabled activists took over a federal building in San Francisco and stayed for 26 days, until the government signed rules to enforce Section 504, the first civil rights law for disabled people. This week her story, by way of her 2020 memoir Being Heumann: An Unrepentant Memoir of a Disability Rights Activist, reaches movie screens in Being Heumann.

Roll is getting in on the action. Through Roll's Rate Your Theater drive, anyone who sees the film from Nov. 6 through Nov. 13 can rate the theater in the Roll app: wheelchair spaces, seats, restrooms and the way in, and also noise, smell, light and crowds. On Nov. 16, Roll will publish what moviegoers found at every theater they rated (and we will share it here and on socials).

The film opens in select theaters Nov. 6 (hey! That’s today!) and streams on Apple TV from Nov. 13. Regal is showing it with open captions at more than 100 theaters Nov. 9–11, with tickets at $5.04 in honor of Section 504. Roll lists showings and locations at rollmobility.com/theaters.

So anyway, go check it out while you check out the new version of the app. Join a group. Start a discussion. Complain about the lack of candy options. Or herald an amazing bathroom. Either way, we are excited to see Judy’s story on the big screen. Because as always – we go further, together.

And as always, thank you for the support,

~Sarah
