The Roll Up

In partnership with

Well hey there folks,

While I was ‘head in the sand’ pretending that the news didn’t just carry on while I work and do life, carried on it did.

We’ve got a new Pope (Daaaaa’h Pope! Do we capitalize Pope? I am showing my non-Catholic upbringing), some exciting rounds of NBA playoffs (sorry, not sorry, die hard Denver Nuggets fan over here), new rumblings on all war-torn fronts, ongoing very real immigration issues, Harvard “clapping back”, yet more tariff drama, and obviously most importantly, Diddy’s trial getting under way.

But that’s not all! Remember when we teased a Roll update that was going to BREAK THE INTERNET?! Okay, it didn’t break the internet, nor did we make those promises, however, the update is here. Check out our updates section below for more on the new teams function. What does this mean for you, the user? You will now have the ability to CRUSH YOUR OPPONENTS AND DECLARE WORLD DOMINANCE/TAKE YOUR PLACE AT THE TOP OF THE FOOD CHAIN JUST ABOVE BABOONS create teams of other users, compete with other users, bring Roll to your place of employment as a means of clout for fun ideas for the organization — all in the name of leaving more reviews and making Roll mo’ betta.

I don’t know about you, but I’m trying not to grow complacent in the midst of the crazy-storm. While batting away the headlines that don’t “matter” and deciphering which ones do, we are aiming to bring you more news on the disability, accessibility, and advocacy front while trying to maintain our sense of humor. As we begin to offer more content like that you will notice that the name of our newsletter is now The Roll Up and with that comes our “plea” to reach out and let us know what you are liking and what you aren’t. If you have a story you are dying to share (informative or human interest both welcomed) we want to hear from you. Pitch it to us. We love an open discussion, and please remember, we are building this thing from the ground up and want to make sure all things “Roll” are rolling (I mean, what choice do I have?) with what you – the end user, the client, the community, the MVP – really want.

So, please read more about our update on the actual app below, but also check out the other stuff we are highlighting. We happen to think it’s pretty dang cool to be able to share this content, and for everyone who knows me, they know I am the ‘king of cool’ 😎 (read: no one. No one says that about me, I assure you.)

As always, thank you for your support.

~Sarah

Updates on the App

When you read the term “teams” are you filled with a level of existential dread that triggers a little PTSD, or are you normal and not in the corporate world and a slave to Microsoft? My apologies to Bill Gates — good thing he is focusing on all this dramatic giving before pulling out of his charity and fading into obscurity (ha!) 😆. Yo, Billy G., will you please start a new non-profit that is geared toward recovering Microsoft users? Asking for a friend. That leads me to our biggest update to date (I think… I have only been with the Roll team for about 6 months) that I, for one, am very excited about: the new TEAMS feature within the app. This means a few different things. First, you can create your own team/competition, AND name your team (might I humbly suggest “BaboonLoversUnite”?) AND you can join other’s teams, AND you can be on multiple teams, AND you can lead a team, AND you can just be teammate, it’s your choice, the world is your oyster! The beautiful thing is if you work some place forward-thinking and cool (or heck, even if you don’t) you are going to be the hero to suggest a fun little work-place competition to see who can leave the most reviews of places in the app. You can also earn points other neat ways like leaving a written review, ranking other’s reviews, etc.

The teams feature will eventually lead to other functionalities we hope to explore, so check it out and engage with the app and with us, ESPECIALLY, if you are confused or have any questions. We want this to be a fun way to get more people using the app, because at the end of the day – the more people that use the app, the more reviews are left, the more useful the app becomes, and ipso facto, boom bat boom, Roll is the premier accessibility app that you can access worldwide built by the folks that use it! And well, we think that is pretty darn cool. Cooler than a polar bear’s toenails.

This fun new teams feature is going to be used internally at a big ol’ company (can’t name names yet) as a team-building and engagement tool, but also as a way to win prizes for their employees. (Interested in something like that? Let’s CHAT!)

We’d love to hear from you! Did we miss the mark, or do you have an idea to make it better? Reach out at [email protected].

👩‍🦽 Crip News You Can Use 👨‍🦼

Accessi-stories From Around the World

While we know no one is champing at the bit (and yes, I do have that phrase correct) to fly in or out of Newark Airport anytime soon, we are excited to see some changes on the horizon for air travel for those with limited mobility. Collins Aerospace, an RTX business, is offering refinements to its Prime wheelchair seating solution and showed it off at the Aircraft Interiors Expo (AIX) in Hamburg, Germany at the beginning of last month. This is especially promising for those in motorized chairs as it has a similar lock-down method currently employed on public transit, while not skimping on being able to access the regular features of a seat.

Do you think this solution is one that will be in place soon? How do you feel about traveling now and what do you hope to see change in the future to make it a little more accessible for everyone?

😄 Wheel-y Good News 😁

Good Folks Doin’ Good Thangs

You guyssssss. Our friends over at MakeGood are doing, well, good things. Again. As if that is any surprise. But we are talking seriously good. Better than good. Not only are they revolutionizing the accessibility and disability support game, they are helping children specifically. I mean, come ON. In a collaboration between MakeGood, LINK, and TOM Global, MakeGood is offering their customizable (not just sweet colors, but even attachments and places to include assistive devices) 3D printed mobility trainers for children, for free, with the design for these chairs soon being available publicly as a fair-use download.

They are nearing the final stages of getting this completed, and we couldn’t be more excited for them, and for our community. This new design is based off TOM Global’s original wood design, and includes input from therapists, clinicians, family, and end-users. MakeGood has given families over 1,600 individualized adaptive devices for free since their founding. Check out more of the story here.

This has us thinking, can you imagine getting this level of support since the time you were a young one?

⚖️ Policy & Prejudice 🤫

Keeping the ol’ checks & balances in check

So, our cousins across the pond (the UK) recently dropped a “Green Paper” that’s supposed to make life easier for disabled folks—by scrapping the Work Capability Assessment (cue polite golf clap)—but naturally, it comes with a side of how-can-we-nudge-you-back-to-work rhetoric. Liz Kendall, a British member of the Labor Party and the Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, promises fewer reassessments and better support, and a much more streamlined assessment, but let’s not ignore the fine print: this is just the latest in a long line of policy pivots where “simplifying the system” somehow translates into shifting the goalposts for what counts as being “disabled enough.” For the Roll community, where global accessibility is front and center, what does this say about how governments define “independence” and “mobility”—and more importantly, who gets to decide that?
