Out Here Bleeding Again

The Roll Up

Well hey there folks,

Lots going on in the world right now. As always, I know, but it feels especially fraught and hard to find a minute to even pause because, well, you also have to stop, and feed yourself, your family, and talk to a friend. I just watched Come See Me In The Good Light and it was the exact thing I needed to see in this moment. I hope you find a moment to center amidst the storm, whatever that may look like. And whoops, my baboon heart is out here bleeding again. (Many thanks to Donora for having that on repeat in my head – check ‘em out here.)

We are going to try a little something new with the newsletters. After a month or two like this, we’d love to hear some feedback or your thoughts on this format. After all, it’s all for you, dear reader. (And no, I’m not turning this into a Bridgerton style tell-all-gossip-column, although… 🤔 ) So, without further ado, I will tell you. In an effort to not flood your brain, and contribute to the external noise machine that is your inbox, we are going to keep these newsletters fun-sized. What does that mean? Well, MORE newsletters, but SHORTER in length. Time will tell if this will drain the attention span further, or (hopefully) help to expand our capacity to ingest meaningful content by making it more accessible.

Over the course of the month I will break the newsletter out into the sections you already know and love, so one week we will cover a policy news piece, and the next it might be the latest in cyborg news and tech, while the following week will hit you in your feels. I’ll keep my intro short too – same snark meets heart, but I’ll try to keep it brief (not my strong suit, admittedly).

Anyway. Be kind to one another. And yourself. And we’ll “see” you next week as we go further, together.

As always, thank you for the support,

Sarah & and the whole rag-tag Baboon team at Roll

P.S. Olympics opening pageantry begins Friday – who else is excited?! Not saying I’m pinning ALL my joy on this, but I’m not NOT saying that either.

Accessi-stories From Around the World

Manual wheelchair users that have hand mobility are getting a long overdue upgrade for their wheels, their brakes, and most importantly, their arms. Most manual wheelchair users are well-acquainted with the lack of integrated brakes, which can lead to friction burns and shoulder injuries. Eppur, a French start‑up founded by engineers Colin Gallois and Lancelot Durand, developed two complementary wheel systems that integrate brakes directly into the wheel hubs.

And this isn’t just “cool gadget” territory: Toyota Motor Europe helped Eppur test early versions with Para athletes and supplied 30 Dreeft wheelsets for the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games athlete village (because some of those routes were… ambitious). One athlete, Yunier Fernandez, reportedly asked to put it on his competition chair – then went on to win Paralympic gold. Casual. Now the “make it real for regular people” part: the Toyota Mobility Foundation is funding clinical studies aimed at getting Dreeft classified as a medical device, which could open the door to reimbursement. Meanwhile, Skeed is still rolling through demos/trials with distributors in places like the UK. So don’t throw out your bejeweled fingerless gloves just yet, but the era of “braking = looking like you got into a bar fight” may finally be ending.
